1) Breathing strongly influences mind, body and moods. By simply focusing your attention on your breathing, and without doing anything to change it, you move in the direction of relaxation.

2) Progressive relaxation is a way of releasing tension in muscles. Often taught in yoga and exercise classes, on self-help tapes and by various instructors - from massage therapists to psychologists - there are many variations of progressive relaxation.

Deep Muscle Relaxation

5) Visualization and guided imagery. While we all look at our internal images from time to time, especially when we daydream or fantasize, few of us have learned how to develop our imaging capacity and take advantage of its ability to affect our minds and bodies.

Guided Imagery Relaxation

6) Biofeedback. The idea of biofeedback is clever and simple: by using technology to help you learn faster relaxation, you can develop sensory awareness of an involuntary function and learn to change it. In a common biofeedback setup, temperature sensors are connected to your fingers, and skin temperature is converted to an audible signal, perhaps a beep tone: the faster the beeps, the higher the temperature. Your job is to make the beeps go faster by raising your skin temperature. The tone gives your ears and brain feedback from a body function that is ordinarily unconscious and beyond the reach of your will. Skin temperature is a measure of blood flow into the hands, and that is determined by the size of little arteries. The autonomic nervous system regulates this flow by causing arteries to constrict (sympathetic influence) or dilate (parasympathetic influence). In order to raise your skin temperature you have to relax your sympathetic nervous system. Unless you do this on a regular basis, you will have wasted your time and money, because the point is to incorporate what you learn into daily life. Ideally you should spend 15 to 20 minutes a day at this practice, preferably after a few minutes of progressive relaxation, visualization or meditation to set the stage.
Biofeedback works best for people whose tension is expressed in bodily complaints such as migraines, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, ulcers, chronic intestinal problems, Raynaud's disease and bruxism. It may also benefit those who feel they need outside help in learning to reduce anxiety and internal stress, or who doubt they can do it on their own. A typical biofeedback training program consists of 10 hour-long sessions, often spaced a week apart.

How to trouble shoot a Stress Thermometer if it looks like your are not getting Hand Temperature feedback.

Is this a brand new unit? There is a label on the back of the unit with Month and Year of manufacture. This should be checked.

If it is Used.

If it has been used for some time, the tiny wires by the Thermistor or Temperature Sensor may have been broken through use and abuse. You cannot tell this by looking at the tip - it might be broken under plastic. A broken tip is not repairable or more accurately it is not cost effective to repair it. It will need to be replaced. See links below or above to order a new unit.

If it is New.

1. Remove the battery from the back of the unit. Slide the battery door off and the battery should pop up or you can carefully use a paper clip.
2. Wait one minute.
3. Reinstall the battery and close the battery door.
4. Try switching between Room and Body.
5. Swith to Body and Put the Thermistor under your arm for 1 minute. Temperature will read be in low 90s if the unit is working.
6. Then switch unit to Room and see if the temp is different. It should be lower in most room environments.

It is possible to have a Body temperature reading that is the same or similar to Room temperature. This above test will determine if the unit is working properly.

If it is a new unit and within the 30 day warranty, contact us for a return and replacement. We have an extremely low failure rate on new units but it does happen on rare occasion.

Biodata for Dr. Tim Lowenstein

A baby diaper pin pushed into arm muscle - no pain, no bleeding.

NOTE: These photos are old but still a valid demonstration. I am reshooting the photos and a video that I will be posting. I have heard that this demonstration has encouraged others to calm down when injured. Freaking out actually can cause more damage than the injury itself. Example, people die of gun shot wounds that are not life threatening. So if you cut your finger, your extreme reaction actually hurts more and slows down your healing.
****************

This photo may be shocking to some. It is offered as a demonstration as the level of skill that you can achieve through training and practice. This puncture wound demonstrates mastery of pain, infection and mental focus.

Typically, we think of advanced mastery skills as being demonstrated by monks from India or some exotic Asian country. I learned this and other skills while attending the very conservative Kansas State University. No it was not based on a course of studies in any college. It was because of the biofeedback equipment at the university and the time and energy I devoted to training. I did not set out to specifically gain these kind of skills. I focused my training on mastery of the mind and body. These unusual skills were the result of that training. Simply, I did not train by sticking a needle in my arm. I trained to enter deeply relaxed Theta and Delta mind states. I also practiced a number of meditation methods to cleanse and purge the personality. It was after intense focus on this kind of training that the unusual ability to manage the mind and body occurred.

It is amazing that this skill and the others have remained all these years. Frankly, the most difficult part of a pain/healing mastery demonstration is dealing with the reactions of the people watching. Some people tend to Ohh and Argh thinking only of their own fear or pain and suffering. It is very hard for them to imagine such an event occurring without a flood of pain and alarm signals.

Nurses and other health care professionals are amazed at how the skin clings to the needle. It forms a small tent as the needle is withdrawn from the body. It appears the skin is reluctant to release the needle.

I experience the event as if I were a member of audience. I do not judge but calmly watch. Internally, my mind accepts the needle and the individual particles of my body move aside to accept this outside entry.

I could go on and on sharing and explaining this level of mastery. I hope it encourages you to take seriously your own ability to manage headaches, ulcers, back pain and the pains of life. I share this so that you can see the advanced levels of training that you can achieve beyond warming your hands and relaxing your muscles.
